Abstract
703,268. Partly electromagnetic switches. METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 18, 1951 [Oct. 19, 1950], No. 25542/50. Class 38(5) A vibrating regulator is provided with electromagnetic bias in the form of a coil mounted on the vibrating contact arm and co-operating with a magnetic field system, whereby the current in the moving coil determines the percentage time the contacts will engage. The field system may be a permanent magnet, or may have an energizing winding carrying a variable current, the bias then being proportional to the product of the current in the two coils. The regulators are applicable e.g. to traction systems as described in Specifications 703,263, 703,264, 703,265 and 703,266, [all in Group XXXV]. As shown arm 30 carrying a contact 34 co-operating with adjustable fixed contacts 35, 36 is pivoted on a knife-edge at 14 and vibrated by a motor 26 driving a crank 24 coupled to the arm above the pivot by a spring 22 pulling against the tension of a spring 17 connected to the arm at 15, below the pivot. The lower end of the contact arm carries a solenoid 9 having an oblate-elliptical cross-section Fig. 3 (not shown) moving in a radial air gap of the magnetic field system which comprises limbs 1, 2, 3, 4 and energizing coil 5; the gap being formed by a laterally offset polar portion 6 of the limb 4 extending into a slotted bore in a lateral extension 8 of limb 1.
