Abstract

757,422. Centrifugal switches; magnetic switches. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. April 1, 1955 [March 26, 1954], No. 8985/54. Class 38(5) In a speed-responsive switch a ferromagnetic body 9.is pivotably mounted at 8 on a rotating shaft 3 so that when stationary one end of the body comes under the influence of a permanent magnet 11 carried by the shaft and an adjustable contact 14 at the other end engages a co-operating contact 18. As the speed increases centrifugal forces overcome the magnetic attraction and the body is displaced to the position shown by the broken lines thereby opening the contacts. This displacement is limited by the adjustable stop 12. The body carries a secondary contact 15 which co-operates with a contact 19 connected to the contact 18 by a spring blade. The contact 18 is mounted on an insulating block 17 fixed to the shaft and current is introduced via a connection 20, a spring-urged brush 21 engaging a conducting disc 22 mounted on an insulated disc 23 in the casing, and a conductor 24 connected to the disc 22..The return is to earth through the shaft and bearing to the casing. The switch is particularly intended for use in motor vehicles.
