Latch needles 14 are held on a bar 13 by a pin 15 about which any of them can be rocked to an inoperative position, shown in chaindotted line, and interdigitate with other latch needles 3 slidable in a bed 2 and individually operated by cams 7, 8, Fig. 4, on a carriage 5 also bearing a thread guide 10 and reciprocated manually along the needle line on rails 4. As the carriage is traversed, yarn is fed and loops are knitted therefrom by the needles 3, whereafter the bar 13 is moved downwardly and upwardly by means of handles 16, to cause the needles 14 to knit. For patterning, the bar 13 may be racked laterally, needles 14 may be selected, the yarn guide may be changed, or with the needles in the position of Fig. 3, loops may be transferred from needles 14 to adjacent needles 3, the bar 13 moved to inoperative position and knitting continued on needles 3. To produce plain-stitch inlaid fabrics, the thread guide 10 is moved to an inoperative position, shown chain-dotted, the carriage 5 is removed from the rails 4, twined through 180 degrees and replaced, Fig. 6, and all needles 3 are advanced, by means of a straight-edge, until their loops are cleared below their latches. The carriage is then traversed back and forth, threads being inserted in the needle hooks, in accordance with a pattern, before each traverse. After each stroke, the cam 8 is automatically tilted on its pivot so that its trailing end is the nearer to cam 7.
