A run-resisting fabric is knitted on a straightbar machine by a method which includes, after the knock-over operation has been completed, the steps of lowering transfer points 33, each to pierce a loop 34a around a predetermined needle corresponding thereto (e.g. each alternate needle 30a, 30c, &c.), displacing the needles and transfer points away from one another to draw such loops rearwardly of the fabric, moving the transfer points parallel to the line of needles through a distance at least equal to the spacing of the needles, to extend the loops, lowering the needles to engage the nearer legs 34c of the loops in the beards of needles such as 30b adjacent those from around which they were drawn, and the other legs 34b in the beards of the needles from which they were drawn, withdrawing the transfer points to leave each extended loop under the beard of the needle from which it was drawn and around the beard of the adjacent needle, relatively moving the needles and hooked knock-over bits 32, to cause that portion 34d of each extended loop lying between the beard of the needle from which it was drawn and the beard of the adjacent needle to engage the throat of the hook of a knock-over bit and be brought from the rear side of the beard of the adjacent needle to a position in front of the shank thereof, thereby inverting the extended portion of the loop to form a closed turn around the shank of the adjacent needle as in Fig. 7. Fabrics in which the operation has been carried out on all and on alternate loops in each course are depicted in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, respectively.
