[Also in Groups VI, XXIV and XXXV] A rotary mixing and cutting apparatus consists of a high speed cutting and mixing machine supported above a driving motor casing 2, Fig. 1, a detachable mixing bowl 3 containing agitating elements driven from the motor, a common base 1 supporting the casing 2 and bowl 3, a speed reduction gear housed within the base for transmitting the drive from the motor to agitating elements in the bowl 3, and means for rendering the transmission inoperative. The motor casing 2 is preferably constructed in the manner described in Specification 741,824, the motor spindle 7 being continued downwards into the base 1. The speed reduction drive consists of a friction wheel 8 engaging the spindle 7, and spur gears 9, 10, 11 coupling the friction wheel 8 to a driving spigot 4 for agitating elements in the bowl 3. The friction wheel 8 is carried by a quadrant 12 swingable about the axis of an idler gear 10. A pivoted arm 18 connected to the quadrant 12 by a spring 19 is manually operable by means of a control knob 22 on the upper surface of the base 1, whereby the quadrant can be turned about its pivot, and the friction wheel thus selectively engaged with or disengaged from the spindle 7. The pressure between the spindle 7 and the gear wheel 8 increases as the load on the agitating elements increases, subject to a limiting pressure obtained when the quadrant 12 engages an adjustable eccentric 16. The bowl 3 is detachably mounted upon resilient supports 5 and torque reaction pins 6 on the upper surface of the base 1.
