740,769. Calendering fabrics; rollers. HOUGH, Ltd., R., BELLIS, N. J., BELLIS, S., and BELLIS, R. March 22, 1954 [April 8, 1953], No. 9484/53. Classes 42 (1) and 42 (2). A fibre bowl for use in calendering or mangling cloth comprises a compressed mass 16 of wood fibres mounted coaxially upon a shaft 10 provided with passages whereby liquid may be fed therethrough so as to impregnate the mass of wood fibres. As shown, the shaft 10 has a central bore 11 communicating, by means of radial passages 15, with longitudinal and circumferential grooves 13, 14 in the shaft surface. In a modification, the radial passages communicate with a single helical groove in the shaft surface. In a calendering operation, cotton cloth passes between a compressed fibre bowl as above and a paper bowl, and then between the fibre bowl and a heated metal bowl; water is continuously fed, e.g. under gravity, to the fibre mass 16 through bore 11, passages 15 and the surface groove or grooves on the shaft, to provide constant impregnation of the fibres. The fibre mass 16 may consist of a number of pressed cakes of short length. Specification 696,739 is referred to.
