In the manufacture of a bowl for use in the treatment of cloth by a so-called wet process, in which a compressed mass of wood fibres in cylindrical form is rigidly mounted co-axially on a shaft, the fibres are thoroughly impregnated with a liquid wholly or largely consisting of water prior to their being mounted on the shaft and being subsequently compressed thereon. By wood fibre is meant wood which is shredded or otherwise broken into small strips or pieces and which can be compressed into a homogeneous mass. As shown, centrally-perforated cakes 11 of compressed, sub-stantially dry wood fibres are soaked in water, which may contain a preservative such as a formaldehyde preparation, are placed on a bowl shaft 14 against an end flange 16 and compressed axially ; further cakes are then added and further compression applied, until the bowl is of the required length when a further flange 16 is applied and the bowl surface machined to size. Each flange 16 is retained by half rings 15 which engage a groove 14b in the shaft and a recess in the flange.
