Abstract

650,946. Treatment of kapok fibres. WIENER [nee VRANCKX], R. Aug. 30, 1947, No. 24036. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1943. [Classes 120(i), 120(ii) and 120(iii)] A process for the treatment of kapok fibres, without moistening them, comprises working a lap of kapok to form a web on the main drum of a carding machine, with the speed of the drum of the order of onehalf of the normal speed, and subjecting the web to the action of the workers having a peripheral speed much more nearly equal to that of the drum speed than is usually the case and to the action of fancies having a peripheral speed greater than that of the workers, the fancies having a fine clothing to produce only a soft rubbing action on the web. As shown, apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a main drum 4, means for driving the drum at about one-half of the usual speed, the drum co-operating with workers 5 and 7 having a peripheral speed much more nearly equal to that of the drum than is usually the case and with fancies 6 and 8 having a peripheral speed greater than that of the workers, the fancies having a fine clothing, the length of which may be such that it only partially penetrates the sheet of fibres. The vibrating comb 10 for removing the sheet of kapok is provided with teeth that are larger at the ends than in the middle part of the comb and the upper roller 12 of the calender rollers 11 and 12 is smaller and lighter than the lower one. Alternatively to the above process, individual narrow laps may be led to the main drum in such a manner as to form a corresponding number of sheets and slivers.
