A sewing machine, typewriter or the like is normally held in concealed position in an article of furniture by a stop and, upon release of the stop, it is tilted into working position by resilient means. A sewing machine, Figs. 1 and 3, is mounted on a table 6 fitting an aperture in the top 4 of a cabinet and carried on a frame 12 having wings 12<SP>1</SP> abutting the underside of the top 4 to limit the upward movement of the machine. The frame 12 is secured to a tube 9 rotatable between side plates 7, 8 and coupled to a ring 11 by a pin and slot connection. A spring 10 is connected at its ends to the plate 8 and the ring 11 to urge the frame upwards to place the machine in working position. The pin and slot connection is adjustable to vary the force exerted by spring 10. A hand-operated lever 17 loaded by a spring 19 has a catch 17<SP>1</SP> which engages a side wing 12<SP>1</SP> to hold the machine in the lower concealed position. In this position, the cabinet has a removable or hinged top 5 fitted. The machine moves under the influence of a dashpot comprising an apertured piston and a cylinder 15, the aperture being adjustable. When the machine is raised, a lug 21 on tube 9 acts through a rod to depress a spring-loaded rubber button 26 into engagement with the floor to inhibit movement of the cabinet (which is wheeled). In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the top 5 can be slid to one side and, when fully displaced, it releases a catch holding the frame 12 in the lower position.
