Class 52(3) [Also in Group XXV] In an article of furniture of the kind in which a table top seat frame or other carrier adapted to support of articles or persons is vertically adjustable relative to a base, the article includes at least one vertical post 13 connected to the carrier and axially slidable in a base a catch piece 15 associated with the or each post, the or each catch piece being pivotally mounted on the base and having an aperture in which the associated post is engaged, resilient means 16 urging the or each catch piece in a direction to retain the associated post against axial movement in the base and manually operable means 17 for moving the catch piece or pieces in opposition to the resilient means the manually operable means being inoperative to move the or at least one catch piece to a post releasing position while the load upon the carrier exceeds a predetermined weight. As shown, the base comprises a body part 6 which is mounted upon three legs 7 and two posts 13 are provided. The manually operable means is a handle which is mounted on a rotatable shaft 18 which also carries a cam 19. The cam engages the centre part of a floating release member 20 the ends of which are disposed to engage the pair of catch pieces 15. A plunger 21 which is loaded by means of a spring 22 is slidably mounted at each end of the floating release member and these plungers engage the catch pieces so that when the load on the carrier exceeds the predetermined amount which is decided by the strength of the springs 22 the springs are compressed and the catch pieces are not released. In a modification the springs 22 can be omitted provided the release member is floating or pivoted so that it can apply unequal movements to the catch pieces. In such a construction when the load on the carrier exceeds the predetermined weight the release membr will be canted when the handle 17 is actuated to move the catch piece exerting the smaller locking force on its post without moving the catch piece exerting the larger locking force. The body part 6 is also provided with a vertically extending leg 9 having a foot 10 which can be moved into contact with the floor or other surface to restrain movement of the base. The foot 10, Fig. 1 (not shown), is spring loaded in a downward direction and can be raised or lowered by an angularly movable handle 11 located in an inclined slot 12 in the body part.
