739,698. Bed-settees. ETABLISSEMENTS J. PANKERT SOC. ANON. May 11, 1954 [Feb. 17, 1954], No. 13729/54. Class 52 (2). Relates to hinge mechanism connecting the back of a settee to the seat part in which the seat part is carried on the support surface 9 of an L-shaped bracket 4 pivotally mounted by links 11, 14 on a fixed frame 2 in which the back is carried by the support surface 10 of an L-shaped bracket 5 pivoted at 8 to the bracket 4 and in which a strut 22 is pivoted to the bracket 4 and can be releasably engaged with an abutment on the bracket 5 to hold the back in upright position. According to the invention, the pivot 21 between the strut 22 and the bracket 4 and the connection between the strut and the abutment are located below the support surfaces 9, 10 to be always visible. Bracket 4 is urged to a lower position by a spring 17 and the strut is urged anti-clockwise about its pivot by a spring 23 into engagement with a cranked abutment 27 carried by bracket 5. As the back is raised, the abutment 27 rides along the underside of the strut until it enters a notch 30 in which it is retained by a catch 31 pivoted to the strut. To release the strut, the back is raised still further so that the abutment 27 moves to the upper side of the nose 36 of the catch 31 and the back can then be lowered to the horizontal position. The horizontal position of the back is limited by an abutment 39 on bracket 5.
