Abstract

391,583. Bed-settees ; rests. JONES, G. M. G., 43, Great Marlborough Street, London. March 15, 1932, No. 7723. [Class 52 (ii).] In a bed-settee the arms of the settee move outwards when the folding mechanism is moved to the bed position, and increase the effective width of the bed. The arm 4 of the settee is connected by a spring 9, Fig. 2, to a bar 10 moving in a guide-plate 12 on the framework of the chair. A hook 13 on the bar engages the under part of the seat 2 so that when the framework is returned to the folded settee position, the bar is removed downwards and pulls the arms 4 back into position. In Figs. 5 and 6, the arms and back are interconnected, a plate 15 being secured to the back 3 and engaging by means of a lug 18 and a spring catch 19, a plate 16 secured on the arm 4. When the back is raised, the lug 18 is lifted out of engagement with a slot 17 in the plate 16, and the spring catch 19 rides up the inclined lower edge to force the arms outwards about its hinges. In a modification (not shown) an inclined rail is used. Fig. 9 illustrates a method in which, when the back 3 is raised the bent part 27 of the lever 25 engages underneath the spring 28 to force the arm outwards. Restricted hinged plates may be used instead of the lever 25, and spring catches engaging recesses in the fixed framework may be used to retain the arms. Specification 363,210 is referred to.
