Abstract
A solution for rendering textiles, paper, porcelain, glass, ceramics and masonry (e.g. bricks, concrete, gypsum) water-repellent, comprises the product of reaction in an aqueous medium of an alkali-metal salt of a hydrocarbon-substituted silane triol and an aluminium salt which is effective in reducing the pH of the silanol salt solution without impairing the stability of the latter. Aluminium salts specified are the nitrate, sulphate, chloride, bromide, citrate and basic acetate. Sodium, potassium, lithium and caesium salts of silanols are specified. Concentrated solutions containing 20 to 50 per cent total solids are preferably made and diluted to the desired concentration, e.g. 6 per cent solids content. Small amounts of water-miscible alcohols, ketones or ethers may be added to enhance the stability. In examples: (1) the sodium salt of methylsilane triol is made by hydrolysing methyl trichlorosilane in water, removing, washing and drying the siloxane which is precipitated and dissolving the resulting powder in aqueous caustic soda; (2,3,4) the solution from example (1) is neutralized with aluminium nitrate nonahydrate; (5) aluminium sulphate and (6) basic aluminium diacetate are used for neutralizing aqueous solutions of sodium methyl siliconate.
