Abstract
A composition for rendering masonry water-repellent comprises an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate and an alkali metal silanolate, i.e. an alkali metal salt of a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon silane triol, in which the hydrocarbon radical may be alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralky and may contain fluorine, chlorine or bromine substituents. In examples the compositions consist of aqueous solutions of sodium silicate and thesodium salt of methylsilanetriol. The alkali metal silanotates may be made by hydrolysing silanes of the formula R SiX3, wherein R is an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or halogenated hydrocarbon radical, and X is a halogen atom, amino group or alkoxy radical, recovering the resulting silane triol or condensate thereof and dissolving it in aqueous NaOH, KOH or CsOH. In example (1) CH3SiCl3 was hydrolysed with excess water and the resulting triol, which separated as a fine powder, was filtered off and dissolved in 50% aqueous NaOH.
