[Also in Group XXIX] Means for driving and controlling the speed of the feed roll t or feed rolls of a roller mill comprises the interposition between a power shaft b, or c, and a driven shaft c, or b, of a hydraulic torque converter comprising a sun-wheel d with which mesh planet pinions f journalled in a carrier e, either the sun-wheel or the planet carrier being the driving member of the torque converter with fluid leading to and from the opposite sides of the intermeshing points of the sun-wheel and planet pinions, and with a valve n movable by linkage o connected with a balance plate or the like p in the feed hopper in accordance with the head of stock in the hopper, the position of the valve n controlling the extent of restriction of fluid flow from the delivery sides of the intermeshing points of the sun-wheel and planet pinions and so the speed of the shaft c which drives the feed roll or rolls of each pair of grinding rollers. Ports i, j, lead to or from the sides of the intermeshing points of the sunwheel and planet pinions and communicate with an annular space k in communication with the valve n through a space m. When the valve n is fully open the sun-wheel can remain stationary while the planet pinions revolve around it, while when the valve is fully closed the sun-wheel and planet pinions revolve at the same speed. At valve positions between the fully open and fully closed extremes, the speed of the driven shaft will be varied directly in accordance with the valve position as controlled by the balance plate p.
