710,630. Variable-speed gear. MANNESMANN AKT.-GES. Nov. 6, 1952 [Nov. 12, 1951], No. 28013/52. Class 80 (2 [Also in Group XXII] A variable speed gear for a feeding device for step-by-step rolling mills wherein the feeding is effected by a motor through gearing (see Group XXII) comprises an epicyclic gear interposed between the motor and said gearing the carrier of the planet gears of said epicyclic gear being controlled by motor via an infinitely variable and reversible regulating gear. In an embodiment a slide 3 carrying a feed device 4 is mounted in guides 1 and 2 and carries a double rack 5 which meshes with two driving pinions 6a and 6b. The pinions are peripherally displaced relative to each other on a shaft 7 so that reversal of movement takes place without lost motion and without jarring of the teeth of the rack and pinions. The shaft 7 is driven through an epicyclic gearing 10 by an electric motor 9 and the crown wheel of the epicyclic gearing meshes with a gear wheel 13 driven by an electric motor 15 through a regulating gear 16. By varying the speed and direction of the rotation of the crown wheel by means of the regulating gear the feeding speed and direction can be accurately controlled. The speed of the driving motor 9 of the feeding device is in phase with the drive of the step-by-step rolls.
