Abstract
738,146. Inductors. COLLINS RADIO CO. Dec. 2, 1953, No. 33504/53. Class 38 (2). A variable inductor comprises a coil 17, the inductance of which is varied by a magnetic core member 18 which moves internally of the coil and by a magnetic member 33 which moves externally of the coil in such a manner that the variable inductance characteristic of the coil versus the movement of the shaft 13 may have any desired law. The powdered magnetic core 18 is moved relative to the coil 17 by means of the screw-threaded shaft 13 there being attached to the core to move therewith a bifurcated member 24 having rollers 28 thereon to guide the member 24 along a guide rail 22. Attached to the member 24 is a lever arm 31 spring-biased so as always to tend to pivot away from the coil 17. The lever arm carries a piece of magnetic material 33 and the end of the arm engages a cam surface 23 attached to the former of the coil 17 so that as the magnetic member moves along the coil it also varies its distance therefrom, thus enabling any desired law of shaft movement versus variation in coil inductance to be obtained. The law itself may be varied by a suitable choice of the shape of the cam 23.
