736,575. Band brakes. TAYLOR, H. G. Sept. 30, 1954 [Nov. 2, 1953], No. 30162/53. Class 103 (1). In a band brake mechanism of the kind in which a band brake is caused to bear on a revolvable brake drum by means of an operating lever which carries a weight and which normally maintains the brake band in frictional engagement with the drum and requires to be raised in order to free the brake drum for rotation, the brake band operating lever comprises two lever parts 10, 11 pivotally connected together at 15 and permitted a small angular movement in a vertical plane as governed by the abutment faces 18 and 17 on lever part 11 and abutment face 16 on lever part 10, one lever part 10 being fulcrummed near the brake drum at 12 and the other lever part 11 carrying a counterweight 13 at the end remote from the pivotal connection 15. Any snatch or kick of the brake band upon the brake drum is transmitted through abutment faces 17, 16 in contact to the weighted part 11 of the lever which will then be thrown upwardly until the abutment faces 18, 16 forcibly engage (Fig. 4) thus counteracting the upward kick causing the weighted lever part 11 to fall rapidly until abutment faces 17, 16 are engaged. This action damps down the kick and ensures positive application of the brake band.
