Control means for a motor-cycle change-speed gear comprises a plate a which is rotated in steps, so as to slide gear selector rods c, d by cam slots g, h, by successive oscillations of a double-armed pawl q co-acting with teeth k on the periphery of the plate a, the pawl q being mounted, through a flat-sided member r, for rotation with a foot- or hand-operated spindle p, disposed at right-angles to the axis of the plate a, while being free to tilt sideways against the action of a spring s in riding over the teeth k when being returned to central position by a U-spring v. The plate a is held against accidental movement by a spring-loaded detent n.
