Abstract

1,128,875. Chain-shift change-speed gear. L. C. H. JUY. 9 May, 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 21572/67. Heading F2D. [Also in Division B7] In a change-speed chain gear the cable control handle 4 is associated with a sector plate 3 mounted on a common pivot 2, the lever being capable of independent movement through an arc limited by two stops 7, 8, the permitted movement of the lever being greater than that of the plate, and a detent 5 locates the lever in any one of a number of defined angular positions 3a, 3b . . . in the plate corresponding to the engagement of the chain on a driving sprocket. The detent 5 is loaded by a leaf spring 6 and the operating cable 13 passes round a washer 11 on pivot 2 and engages a stop member 12a. As shown with low gear engaged, detent 5 engages recess 3a, and cable 13 and a return spring (not shown) hold lever 4 and sector 3 against the stop 7. To engage the next gear the lever and sector are turned counterclockwise until sector 3 engages stop 8 to initially tension the cable, and lever 4 is then moved further till detent 5 engages the next recess 3b to transfer the driving chain to the next sprocket. On completion of gear change cable 13 and the return spring rotate lever 4 and sector 3 until the latter re-engages stop 7 to reduce the tension in the cable.
