Abstract

735,581. Silencing gaseous currents; spray carburetters. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 10, 1952 [Nov. 10, 1951], No. 25385/52. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). [Also in Group XXVIII] A tube 12 forming a carburetter air inlet passage mounts coaxial outer and inner casings 18, 17 containing between them an annular air cleaner 10 and an annular resonator silencer 11, the inner casing 17 containing the carburetter float chamber 51. Air enters the cleaner 10 through a passage 29 and an oil sump 22 wherein it is exposed to oil which it constantly circulates around a perforated baffle 40, radial fins 42 assisting axial entry. From the cleaner 10 the air passes to the tube 12 between radial fins 48, past the mouth of a " hiss-suppressing " auxiliary silencer 50<SP>1</SP>, along longitudinal passages 66, formed between a cylindrical wall 60 and a corrugated wall 65, and past the mouth of a passage 61 communicating with the silencer 11 via holes in the casing 17. The whole assembly is retained to the tube 12 by a wing nut 59 screwing on a stud projecting from the float chamber 51 and bearing on a loose cover 44 lined with felt &c. 49. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the resonator silencer extends upwardly around the air cleaner which is now fed, via an oil sump as before, from a chamber beneath it which receives air via a radial tube through the silencer and surrounded for part of its length by an annular passage connecting the silencer to the chamber, the auxiliary silencer and longitudinal passages being dispensed with.
