[Also in Group XXXIX] A sub-aqueous transducer comprises a disc in which vibrations in the plane of the disc cause or are caused by vibrations normal to the disc. A disc 16 of barium titanate has electrodes 21 on the front and rear faces, the rear face and edge of the disc being shielded acoustically by air inside the casing 17 while the front face of the disc is able to transmit or receive sub-aqueous signals through a rubber cap 19. The cable from the generator 36 or receiver 38 enters the casing through a cap 28 clamped to the casing at 29. The transducer may be secured to a mounting by member 24. A piezo-electric or titanate crystal 44, Fig. 5, may be secured to a disc 40 of glass, steel, brass or other substance having a suitable Poisson ratio. The transducer may use magneto-strictive means instead of a crystal.
