Abstract

1,265,326. Ultrasonic signalling apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 23 July, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 35858/68. Heading G4F. A system for communication along a pipe line comprises a transmitter including a first transducer for propagating an ultrasonic vibration through the wall of the pipe and a receiver including a second transducer for detecting the vibration at a receiving station, an insert of poor transmissive characteristics being located in the pipe line and quarter wavelength from the first transducer on the side remote from the receiver. The first transducer may be of the piezoelectric or magnetostrictive type, Fig. 2 (not shown); several such transducers may be arranged at half wavelength intervals. A receiving transducer may comprise a cylinder of piezoelectric material, Fig. 4 (not shown), a strain gauge, or a pick-up coil using the change in magnetization of a magnetized section of the pipe. Reference is also made to the use of vibrations in the shear mode produced by torsional stress.
