Class 40 (4) [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL (b)] A combined transmitting and receiving transducer for sound-wave ranging by the pulseecho system comprises a circular piezo-electric crystal 1 diametrically divided into two D- shaped sections 1a and 1b mounted in an earthed metal cup 2 containing a plastic material 4 (such as polyvinyl chloride) which serves to hold two plate-like electrodes 3 against the underfaces of the respective crystal sections, one being connected to a pulse generator and the other to a receiver amplifier. A circular diaphragm 5 is diametrically grooved at 6 and may be secured against or adjacent the crystal 1 by a band clip 7 located by the engagement of a pin 8 with a slot 9. A screen 10 connected to the cup 2 is disposed between the sections 1a and 1b In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the crystal is divided into a central disc for connection to a pulse generator and surrounding annulus for connection to a receiving amplifier. The electrodes may be evaporated or sputtered on to the appropriate crystal surface, and also serve to damp crystal oscillations and give a rapid decay after energization.
