Abstract

895,636. Ultrasonic flaw detection. KELVIN & HUGHES Ltd. June 21, 1960 [July 15, 1959], No. 24387/59. Class 40(7). Ultrasonic flaw detection apparatus com prises at least three electro-acoustic transducers disposed side by side and adapted to transmit ultrasonic pulses into, and receive reflected pulses from, a test piece, a device for displaying or recording transmitted and received pulses on a time base, and means for selectively switching the transducers in such a manner as to permit the display of echoes from transmissions along at least four different paths in the body, the paths extending between only one transmitting and one receiving transducer, or away from and back to a single transmitting and receiving transducer, in each setting of the switching means. In one embodiment the displays on a deflection-modulated cathode-ray tube screen, Fig. 2 (not shown), corresponding to flaw 14 radiating from a hole 13 in a rail, are obtained by using four transducers A..D and ganged switches 16, 17. In a modification three transducers are used, Fig. 6 (not shown). The transducer assembly, Fig. 4, is carried by a support 23 slidable along a frame 24 by means of a lead screw 25 driven by a handwheel 26. Frame 24 is clamped to the rail under test by clamps 29 the jaws of which can be opened by hand lever 30.
