Abstract

490,599. Echo - sounding apparatus. RICKETS, W. J. Feb. 16, 1937, No. 4630. [Class 118 (ii)] The interval between the emission of the primary sound and the receipt of the echo is measured by a cathode-ray oscillograph in which, by means of a pair of deflecting magnets 4a, 4b rotated by a motor 5, the cathode beam is caused to trace a circular path on the fluorescent screen 15. At an appropriate point of the rotation, the sound emitter 19 operates over brushes 17, 18, and at the same time an impulse is transmitted to the magnets 4a, 4b, or alternatively to conical plates 21a, 21b, to produce an increased deflection of the beam. This action is repeated on the receipt of the echo by the receiver 20, and the distance between the two indications is read on a scale, which may be adjustable to bring the zero to the first indication. The screen is preferably such that the trace persists -for one revolution. The radius of the trace may be varied by means of a rheostat 14 in the circuit of the deflecting magnets.
