585,140. Electrical determination of vibrations. KING, A. J., and METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 9, 1945, No. 3348. [Class 37] [Also in Group XIX] Apparatus for determining the components of a vibration comprises a frame supporting six resistance strain gauges arranged in quadrature, one end of each gauge being connected to a central mass 3, the gauges being connected in pairs in Wheatstone networks. As shown, the frame comprises two circular hooks carrying screws 7 whereby the tension in the gauge elements may be adjusted. The elements, say 4, 4a, Fig. 2, are in circuit with resistances 11, 12, 16, the last being variable to adjust the zero or datum line on the indicating instrument 14 which may be a cathode ray tube or other oscillograph. The current supply may be direct or alternating and the three pairs of gauges may have a common lead 10 to the indicating apparatus in the form of a three-element oscillograph giving the x, y and z components on a common screen 19. The amplification of the bridge circuits may be controlled separately at 18. From the known amplification and sweep adjustment of the oscillograph, the frequency and amplitude of each component can be determined. Modulated frequency envelopes (Fig, 7, not shown) or half-wave rectified records (Fig. 8, not shown) may be used. The gauge element may comprise a fine resistance wire wound lengthwise on a strip of flexible insulating material provided with terminals and hooks whereby quick changes of the gauge element or the centre mass can be effected.
