Abstract

Dispersion in a wave transmission medium is corrected at the receiving end by transmitting the received signal through an "impersive" medium to a further receiver. As applied to ultrasonic flaw detection in a plate 4 (or thinwalled tubing) a short pulse of Lamb waves is generated, the mode of vibration being the first asymmetrical mode, and travels across the plate; higher frequencies travel at higher velocity and the input to receiver 5 is frequency-modulated as shown. If flaws in one particular region are considered a correction system need be provided only for one amount of dispersion (since the amount of dispersion is a function of distance travelled); the correction system utilizes the first symmetrical mode of vibration in a plate 8. For correction of dispersion for signals arriving from any range several receiving transducers 9 are provided and switched into circuit sequentially, Fig. 2 (not shown); a suitable gating pulse generator is based on a nickel delay line, Fig. 3 (not shown). The initial transmitted pulse may be frequency-modulated, Fig. 4 (not shown); pulse compression is achieved as described in Specification 604,429. Coupling the ultrasonic energy into hot material under test is then possible with air as the couplant. The invention is stated to be applicable for radio wave transmission correction.
