Abstract
710,124. Testing materials by sonic or ultrasonic waves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 5, 1951 [Sept. 22, 1950], No. 20965/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 118 (2). The density or thickness of a sheet of paper or metal foil is determined by placing it in an air space between a cone-shaped electromechanical transmitting transducer operating at a frequency of less than 40,000 c/s and a similar receiving transducer, the change in intensity or phase of. the received waves being measured. When using low frequencies, e.g. a few hundred cycles per second, the sensitivity is increased by adjusting the frequency so that resonant standing waves are produced between the transmitter and receiver before inserting the sheet midway between them. Fig. 1 (not shown). At higher frequencies, e.g. 20 kc/s, the transducers are spaced further apart and undesirable standing waves are reduced by placing the sheet obliquely to the transmission path.
