1445151 Ultrasonic thickness gauge KRAUTKRAMER GmbH 24 Aug 1973 [29 Aug 1972] 40281/73 Heading H4D In a system for measuring the wall thickness of a specimen, by transmitting an acoustic pulse into the specimen to excite a wall resonance and determining the oscillation frequency of a time-gated portion of the resulting wavetrain received from the specimen, a clocked counter is arranged to count upwards from an initial value for the duration of the transmission pulse and is switched to count downwards when the leading edge of the wavetrain is received. When the initial count value is reached, a delay period (a selected number of oscillation cycles of the receiver signal) elapses before a frequency counter for determining the oscillation frequency is switched on. The required time-gate thus includes a substantially pure (decaying) sinusoidal portion of the wavetrain. A gated portion of the wavetrain is also fed back to the transmitter to re-excite the wall resonance (a noise generator having been used for the initial excitation). The apparatus is adjusted to give maximum deflection on a received signal amplitude monitor.
