Abstract

An electroacoustic transducer (22) of this device is used for emitting sound wave trains against a surface to be measured and a reference reflection surface and also for receiving the echoes from the said surfaces. To generate a sound wave train, the transducer (22) is in each case excited into a decaying resonant oscillation by means of an electric pulse from a free-running pulse generator (21). During each measuring process, an electric transmit pulse, a reference echo pulse and a measurement echo pulse are supplied to a shift register (24) which distributes these pulses to three lines (24S, 24R, 24M). Clock pulses for measuring the transit time of the sound wave trains are supplied to a pulse counter (26) which can be started in each case by the transmit pulse. The counting output (39) of the pulse counter (26) is connected to a memory for the count result on occurrence of the measurement echo pulse, and to a circuit arrangement (31) for automatically controlling the repetition rate of the clock pulse transmitter (30). This circuit arrangement (31) contains a digital coincidence stage (52), which can be preset in accordance with the known distance of the reference reflection surface, and a first-pulse detection stage (55). The latter is supplied with the output signal of the coincidence stage (52) and the reference echo pulse. The first-pulse detection stage (55) controls a control voltage for the clock pulse transmitter (30).
