Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the degree of tissue anisotropy of a rolled steel material and the rolled direction without destruction by transmitting and receiving transversal wave- mode ultrasonic waves in the thickness direction of the tested material by an electromagnetic ultrasonic wave prober for transversal wave.
CONSTITUTION: Transversal-mode ultrasonic waves are trasmitted or received in the thickness direction of steel material 1 by electromagnetic ultrasonic prober 5 for transversal wave. The receiving time of the bottom face echo dependent upon the transversal ultrasonic wave of two vibration components orthogonal to each other, namely, the sound velocity of the transversal ultarsonic wave is measured by gate circuits 10, 11 and 11' and counters 13 and 13', and the ratio of two bottom face echo heights is obtained by divider 14, and the degree of issue anisotropy of rolled steel material 1 and the rolled direction are detected from the direction of prober 5 where this ratio become maximum or minimum.
