[Also in Group XL(c)] An acoustic variable-delay line used in an ultrasonic pulse-echo system (see Group XL(c) ) consists of a spiral of nickel wire coupled at one end to a fixed magnetostrictive transmitter coil and traversed throughout its length by a receiver coil. In another arrangement a transmitter and receiver are mounted on respective relatively movable spaced plates so that a transmitted pulse is reflected back and forth several times between them before reaching the receiver.
