Abstract

1,010,112. Ultra-sonic wave couplings. AEROPROJECTS Inc. May 29, 1962 [June 5, 1961], No. 20644/62. Heading H4J. An ultra-sonic wave coupling comprises a tapered (frusto-conical) section 12 having a cylindrical section 14 at its smaller end and a plurality of integral arms 18 at its larger end and has magneto-strictive transducers 38 attached either directly or through further coupling members 22 to each of the arms. The angle α between two arms should preferably be less than 76 degrees, i.e. half the angle at which a phase change in longitudinal waves, due to reflections at the junction of the arms, occurs; the depth of the slit 16 between the arms should be less than one-eighth of a wave length and the length of the arms from face 20 to working face 44 should be equal to an integral number of half wavelengths. A coupler having more than two arms is described with reference to Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). Each transducer may be mounted in a device 30 as is described in Specification 877,966 and probes of the type described in Specification 895,414 may be attached to face 44.
