[Also in Group XL (c)] In an ultrasonic flowmeter for measuring the flow of liquid in a pipe 10 (see Group XL (c)), a narrow beam of ultrasonic waves is projected into the liquid at a small angle to the normal to the inner surface of the pipe by means of a transducer 12 and coupling wedge 13, a notch 29 being cut in the pipe with its face perpendicular to the beam direction. The transducer 12 and coupling wedge 13 are preferably curved so that the interfaces between the wedge, pipe and liquid are concentric.
