Abstract
835,254. Ultrasonic wave couplings. ELECTROCIRCUITS Inc. April 19, 1956, No. 11970/56. Class 40 (4). A liquid stream of jet is used to couple a flaw-testing transducer 12 with a test piece 18. The ultrasonic waves reflected or scattered by a flaw return to the transducer against the fluid stream. The liquid is supplied through an inlet 16 and flows across the face of the transducer 12 before it is directed on to the test piece 18 through a nozzle 15 which may be exponential. The liquid is connected by a splash-box 20 and is removed through an outlet 22. One or more exponential horns 24 may be used to concentrate the vibrations on to the test piece. A testing head may include a main jet 39, Figs. 3, 5, with a transducer 39A and a number of supplementary jets 40, 41, 42 with transducers 40A &c. the supplementary jets being used with a servo-mechanism to train the main jet on to the test piece. Different liquids may be used in the different jets.
