Abstract
727,424. Sound recording devices. COSMOCORD, Ltd., and KELLY, S. June 26, 1953 [July 3, 1952], No. 16759/62. Class 40 (4). In the process of cutting a gramophone record, in order to reduce background noise, the stylus is vibrated not only by the frequencies to be recorded but also by an additional frequency outside the range to be recorded, preerably above 30 kc/s. and at least twice thehighest frequency to be recorded. The direction and waveform of the superposed vibration is immaterial. In one embodiment the pivots of a moving iron armature carrying the cutting member are caused to vibrate through the action of a piezo-electric crystal fed with the additional frequency. In another embodiment, the armature is T-shaped, the horizontal piece carrying the pivots, and a crystal of barium titanate is cemented at its centre to the stem of the T for the purpose of supplying the additional vibration. Alternatively, the stem of the T may be excited magneto-strictively by a coil surrounding it. Alternatively, with a piezo-eloctric crystal type recorder the additional frequency may be superimposed electrically on the recording frequencies either by series or parallel connection.
