ELECTRIC TIMI OF NEW YORK.
Application filed November 18, 1921. Serial E50. 516,4?51.
To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, HARRY B. WIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union, State of New Jersey, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sound Recording and Reproducing Apparatus, of which the followg is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to apparatus for the recording and the reproduction of sounds, and particularly to electrical recording and reproducing means. p
An object of the invention is to provide means for and methods of recording and reproducing sounds in their natural acoustical relation. i Other objects appear hereinafter. In neralthe invention 1provides a pair of recor ing devices for simu ing sounds, and a pair of reproducing devices for simultaneously reproducing the recorded sounds;
' In previous systems for reproducing from one source, and any sense as to their Y direction or relative location was lost in their reproduction. This invention provides for the reproduction of sounds so that they may be heard in their natural acoustical relation and thus render orchestral reproductions and others made by more than one per;- former more intelli ble' Referring to the rawings: Fig. 1 representsapparatus for ultaneously making two records of the same sounds; 1
Fig. '2 represents apparatus for reproducing the records made by the apparatus she in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 represents apparatus for simultana ously recording the same sounds on two dif- 'ierent records;
Fig. 4 shows apparatus for reproducing theFspungds recorded by the apparatus shown I in 1 g Fig 5 is-a sectional view of the reproducer;
Fig. 6 shows the form of stylus used in the rder. I 1 Fig. 7 shows the relation of two recorders ,or reproducers for mg simultaneous f. traces on .the s record or reproducing rmm such tracea 1 y In Fig. l, tratterss and 9 for cc e tery circuits.
taneously recordsounds, all sounds were heard as emanating adj ustabl a ing the sound waves are connected in series with batteries 10 and 11, and the primaries of induction coils 12 and 13 as in local bat- The secondaries of coils 12 and 13 are connected to the electromagnetic recorders 19 and 20, respectively, which are energized from batteries-14c and 15. Sounds collected by transmitters 8 and 9 are simultaneously recorded by Styluses l6 and 17 on a record 21, which rotates with an arbor 22 of a honograph machine, not shown.
In ig.,2 Stylusesand 31 reproduce the sounds recorded on the record 21 in receivers 28 and 29 one for each ear such as a double head receiver. In series with the reproducers 32and 33 and their respective-receivers 28 and 29ers resistances 36 and 37 for the purpose of equalizing the volume of sound in receivers. It is obvious that a number of receivers, with then respectwe reslstances,
may be connected in parallel across the rearbor-s 26 and 27 coupled together by an adjustable cou ling 25. In like manner the .reproducing from that of Fig. 2- in that it is adapted to reproduce the sounds from the separate records made by the device shown in Fig. 3. The records are synchronized by any wellknown synchronizing coupling 25, connected between shafts 26 and 27.
In the recorder and reproducer illustrated in Figs 5, 3 and 7 the magnetic systems '32 and 33 may be the same as those of Patent 1,28%,623 to H. C. Egerton, and pivotally supported on a bracket 40, carried by a housing 41, by means of hinge members 39 and as, and brets 45 and 42. The
bracket 45 and the hin e member 39 are and an a justing screw 51. One end of the adjusting screw 51 has threaded engagement with the hinge member 39 and the other end which is provided with a double flange for engaging each side of bracket 45 throu h slot 53, so that by loosening bolt 43 e stylus 31 maybe advanced or retarded by turning screw 51. Similar adjustment is provided for the other reproducer. This means of adjustment rmits of the transmitters being placed in the most advantase'cured toget or by a bolt d3.

systems when lifted cleur of the record.
' The ormetures 4:9 end 50 are provided with p 1919, muy
0d set portions for carrying the Styluses us close to each other'ns possible.
it is evident that in. cases Where exceptionally high grade records are desired two such systems, employing amplifiers and high quality transmitters, as disclosed in applicution, Serial Number 310,064 filed July 11, he used. Also W on necessary amplifiers moy be connected between the reproducers end the receivers in any well lmownmunner. I 3
What is cloimed is:
l. A hineurel system for recording end reproducing sounds comprisin or air of transmitters for simultaneous y co ecting the some sounds, or record, o, double recorder for recording the sounds collected by each transmitter on snid record, n doulole reproducer for reproducing the recorded sounds end u puir of receivers connected to said W reproducers whenehy the sounds may he heard in their nuturel ecousticnl reletion transmitters for simultuneo incense nir of reproducing s0 n trensmitters for simultuneous oo looting a the -snme sounds-,- e record, n don le recorder sounds on such truce; meens for edjusting thev relation .etween the recorded soun swhenehy they mop-he reproduced in their true hineursl relution, end at pnir of: remivers connected to said reproducers,
e, A-hinuurul system for recording ond reproducing sounds comprisin u eir of y co ecting the some sound, n record, e double electromagnetic recorder for recordin the sounds in parallel trues on suid recor menus for I udusting the hose relution of'the recorded sounds, n dou le electromegnetie re reducer for reproducing the recorded soun menus for adjusting the phese relation of the re produced vihrutions whereby the sounds many loeheurd in their nnturelonousticol ion. 4 Y
