In a magnetic transducer the edges of the polepieces remote from the air gap are asymmetric, oblique, slotted or otherwise irregular with regard to the airgap, for the purpose of avoiding the attenuation which may occur when both faces have a dimension, in the direction of travel of the record medium, commensurate with a halfwavelength, or multiples of half-wavelengths, of the sound being recorded or reproduced.
