Abstract
734,757. High vacuum diffusion pumps. EDWARDS & CO. (LONDON), Ltd., W. Aug. 28, 1952 [Aug. 29, 1951], No. 20425/51. Class 71. A high vacuum vapour pump comprising two or more stages 5, 6, Fig. 1, has at least one auxiliary boiler 7 in addition to a main boiler 1 and supplied with liquid solely with by condensation of vapour from the main boiler 1 or from a preceding auxiliary boiler. Oil vapour rising from the boiler 1 condenses on the outer wall of a tube 8 leading to the high vacuum stage 5 and runs into a tray 7<SP>1</SP> from which any excess overflows back to the main boiler. In a modification the undersurface 14, Fig. 3, of an auxiliary boiler 15 is so shaped as to cause liquid condensed thereon to flow in the same direction as the vapour from the main boiler 1 for collection in a gutter 16, and in a further modification an auxiliary vapour tube 22, Fig. 4, provides an annular duct between it and a main vapour tube 23 up which some vapour ascends to be condensed on the undersurface 18 of an auxiliary boiler 19, thereby reducing loss by condensation before the auxiliary boiler is reached of the more phlegmatic constituents of the mixed vapour from the main boiler; liquid from the surface 18 being swept by vapour into a gutter 20. Splash baffles 13 as described in Specification 700,978 are provided.
