Abstract
734,720. Automatic catches. HALLAM, SLEIGH & CHESTON, Ltd. April 6, 1954 [May 22, 1953], No. 14421/53. Class 44. [Also in Group X] A slidable ventilation panel 1, Fig. 2, for a railway or other vehicle is provided with a fastening element that is housed partly within an outwardly projecting air deflector vane 5 on an edge of the panel. As shown a pair of slidable panels 1, 2, are provided each comprising a glass panel mounted in a rectangular frame 3, 4, respectively, a hollow deflector vane 5, 6, being integral with each frame. The open sides of the vanes 5, 6, are closed by cover plates 7, 8, screwed at 11, 12, Fig. 5, to the flat faces of lugs 13, 14 on the vanes. The middle portion of each plate 7, 8, is shaped to form a slot 15, through which a catch 33 may protrude, and a recess 16 respectively having a striker flange 17 to form a stationary catch part. To slide the panels 1, 2, to form a ventilation opening, the handle 29, which projects through a gap 30 in plate 7 is moved to the left so as to rotate about a pivot pin 31 housed within the vane 5. This causes a curled over portion 36 to press the rear.arm 34 of a bell crank catch element against the action of its spring 35 and rock the catch part 33 out of engagement with the striker flange 17. The catch element is also pivoted on pin 31, and is slotted to pass the reduced width portion of lever 29. A fixed handle 27 similarly shaped to the operating part of handle 29 is secured by its shank portion 28 to the cover plate 8. Rubber buffers 21, 22 are housed within box-sectioned portions 19, 20, of plates 7, 8 above and below the fastening elements. According to an embodiment described in the Provisional Specification only one rubber buffer is provided and the operating lever is forked at its inner end to accommodate the catch element.
