Abstract
734,387. Cold-cathode tubes. NORTHROP AIRCRAFT, Inc. May 20, 1953, No. 14156/53. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XL (c)] A glow tube comprises a pair of anodes 9, 10 and a cold cathode 8 positioned between them, all the electrodes lying in a common plane. The cathode surface is divided into two separate cathode glow areas with one area facing each anode. The cathode may consist of two spaced wires joined together electrically with a shield separating them, Fig. 2 (not shown); or a single wire may have a mica or other insulating sheet 12 inserted in a diametral slot at right-angles to the common plane; or a diametral layer of insulating paint may be applied so as to separate the glow surfaces on each side of a single wire, Fig. 1A (not shown). In all cases the purpose is to prevent the glow migrating into the region opposite a non- discharging anode, so that the tube may possess two definite stable states for use in a flip-flop circuit (see Group XL (c)). The filling may be neon at between 100 mm. and half an atmosphere and a trace of polyatomic gas may be added to decrease deionization time and promote triggering.
