Abstract
734,348. Continuous casting-machines. BRENNAN, J. B. June 12, 1952 [Nov. 15, 1951], No. 14848/52. Class 83 (1). A continuous casting-machine comprises an arcuate die passage and a rotatable carrier with peripheral pockets arranged so that the pockets are filled with molten metal and then discharged into the die passage from which the metal is withdrawn in solid form. A wheel 6 with peripheral pockets 17 is rotatably mounted in a die block 5 so that the upper part projects into the bottom of a crucible 1 and the lower part projects beneath the block 5. The crucible and the upper part of the block 5 are surrounded by highfrequency heating coils 4 and 9 and the lower part of the block has cooling coils 10. At one side of the wheel, the block 5 is formed with an arcuate mould passage 7. As the wheel rotates each pocket in turn communicates first with a vacuum chamber 18, then with an outlet 3 from the crucible 1 so that the pocket rapidly fills with molten metal and finally with the mould passage 7 into which it discharges. The pockets may comprise cylinders 17 in which pistons 20 are reciprocated by means of pins 22 projecting into a cam groove 21, Fig. 2. The molten metal passes from the pockets into the mould cavity and is cooled to form. a strip 13. Beneath the lower part of the wheel is a driven band 11 cooled by sprays, 12, the casting being enclosed between the wheel and the band. The cast strip 13 leaving the die may be rolled at 15 and coiled at 16.
