Abstract
744,238. Casting-machines and processes. ZUNCKEL, B. June 20, 1952 [June 20, 1951], No. 15639/52. Class 83 (1). Mass production of castings is characterized in that metal or other molten material is cast in continuous sequence into mould cavities cooled on one side by a cooling plate forming one side of the cavities and along which the moulds move, the inlet sides of the cavities being temporarily closed in succession after filling. The cavities 1, Figs. 2 and 3, may be formed in a metal or ceramic plate 2 and communicate with the outlet 4 of a pot 3 containing molten metal. The bottoms of the cavities 1 are closed by a fixed water-jacketed plate 5 which is not so long as the plate 2 so that when this is reciprocated the castings fall, or can be pushed down, out of the cavities 1 which are beyond the end of the plate 5. A metal band 6, which may be endless, may be arranged between the plates 2, 5 to move with the former if the metal has not solidified when the plate 2 moves. To keep the plate 2 at the best temperature it may be heated or cooled as required. Cores may be pushed through the cooling plate into the castings just formed and be withdrawn when these solidify and before the plate 2 advances. In a modification the molten metal enters the mould cavities 12, Fig. 4, in the movable plate 11, upwardly at a point in advance of the cooling plate 13 through a channel 14 which may lead from a container 3 at a higher level. The channel 14 may be cooled or heated by means at 15. Alternatively the plate 11 may rotate about a vertical axis so that the cavities 12 always move in the same direction past the channel 14. The mould plate may be of cylindrical form 19, Fig. 6, mould cavities 21 being formed in its periphery which is engaged by the outlet 22 of a molten metal pot 23 arranged as shown or on top of the cylinder. The cooling plate 24 is of part cylindrical form and in addition a heating or cooling plate 27 may be used. An endless metal band 31, Fig. 8, not shown, may be arranged between the cylinder 19 and cooler 24 and the cooler 24 may be omitted provided the band is cooled as by fluid spray. The cooler also may move, e.g. the plate 5, Fig. 4, or 24, Fig. 6, may move in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the drawing. Blanks so formed are stated to have an oriented crystal structure, due to the unilateral cooling, which renders them suitable for hot or cold working by deformation perpendicular to the crystal orientation.
