Abstract
In a cyclic process for the preparation of hydrogen peroxide by reduction of an alkyl or aryl substituted anthraquinone, e.g. 2-ethyl or butyl anthraquinones, and autoxidation of the resultant anthraquinhydrone or anthrahydroquinone with subsequent removal of the hydrogen peroxide formed, the solvent comprises an ester of phthalic acid, e.g. dibutyl-, dimethyl-, diamyl-, di-(ethylhexyl)-, di-(ethylene glycol monobutyl ether)-, dibenzyl-, or benzyl-butyl-phthalates, and should have a melting-point of not more than 50 DEG C. The reaction temperature should be sufficient for the ester to be liquid. The anthraquinone is reduced with hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst say at 20 DEG or 30 DEG C. After separation of the catalyst the reduced solution is oxidized by blowing in air, and hydrogen peroxide is extracted with a countercurrent of water.
