Abstract

Hydrogen peroxide is produced by the alternate reduction and oxidation of an alkyl anthraquinone in a solvent medium comprising an alkyl ester of benzoic acid, e.g. ethyl or isobutyl benzoate. The process comprises catalytic reduction with hydrogen of the alkyl anthraquinone in the solvent medium, oxidation with air or oxygen of the reduced solution after removal of the catalyst, thereby regenerating the alkyl anthraquinone and simultaneously producing hydrogen peroxide, and recycling of the oxidized solution to the reduction stage after extraction of the hydrogen peroxide with water. The solvent medium may also comprise alphanethyl-naphthalene, or a diallyl ether of ethylene or diethylene glycol, e.g. dibutyl diethylene glycol. The alkyl anthraquinone may be 2-ethylanthraquinone. The catalyst may be Raney nickel. Examples are given.
