Abstract
1390408 Hydrogen peroxide by anthraquinone process SOLWAY & CIE 6 July 1972 [8 July 1971] 31654/72 Heading C1A A mixture of 2-tert. amyl and 2-sec. isoamyltetrahydroanthraquinones are used as intermediates in the anthraquinone process for producing H 2 O 2 . The mixture preferably contains 30-55% by wt. of the 2-tert. compound and 70-45% of the 2-sec. compound. The solvent may be a mixture of (a) C 6 -C 11 petroleum fractions, naphthalene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, alkyl benzenes or anisole with (b) aliphatic alcohols having at least 6 carbon atoms, e.g. heptanol, methylcyclohexanol, octan-2-ol, diisobutyl carbinol, or aliphatic esters of carboxylic or phosphoric acids. The quinone hydrogenation may be catalysed by Raney Ni, or Pd on hydroxyapatite, Re, Rh, Pt or Pd at a temp. of 45-70‹.C. to 90% conversion. The quinol oxidation may be carried out in air at a pressure of 3-5 kg.(cm.<SP>2</SP> in a co- or counter-current manner in a packed column at a temp. of 20-50‹ C. Anthraquinone by-products may be removed, prior to recycle after H 2 O 2 removal, by treatment with alkali metal or alkaline earth metalhydroxides, or alkaline alumina or aluminosilicates at temp. of 20-150‹ C.
