Abstract

Impurities which cause discoloration of tar acids, mainly catechol derivatives, are removed by washing with a solution of boric acid or a borate and then subjecting the tar acids to mild oxidation by passing an oxygen-containing gas therethrough. Preferably, a borax solution is used containing either less than 5 per cent or more than 10 per cent of borax. A suitable solution contains 15 per cent of borax and is used at 50 DEG C. The washing is carried out under alkaline conditions. Catechol derivatives may be recovered from the used borax solution. After washing with boric acid or a borate, the tar acid may be oxidized by heating to 80 DEG C. in a current of air or oxygen advantageously in the presence of an oxidation catalyst such as alkaline permanganate or oxides or organic salts such as naphthenates or oleates of various metals, e.g. cobalt nickel manganese or lead. In examples: (1) tar acids are washed with a solution of boric acid in sodium hydroxide and the washed acids are air blown in the presence of alkaline permanganate and (2) tar acids are washed with borax solution and air blown in the absence of catalysts. Specification 363,330 is referred to.
