Abstract

Benzene carboxylic acids are prepared by subjecting the mixtures obtained by first treating the corresponding alkyl benzenes at elevated temperature with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases, if desired in the presence of oxygen transferrers, until no further oxygen is absorbed and then treating with nitric acid at elevated temperatures and if desired under increased pressure, to a treatment in an aqueous alkaline medium with a hypochlorite. Alkyl benzenes specified are toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, diethylbenzene, di-isopropylbenzene and cymene. After the nitric acid oxidation, the nitric acid is separated and the mixture containing carboxylic acids is dissolved or suspended in 1 to 10 per cent aqueous alkaline liquor and heated to 40-85 DEG C. with the calculated amount of hypochlorite. The reaction mixture is acidified to recover the carboxylic acid. The hypochlorite treatment may also be conducted by leading chlorine into the alkaline solution or suspension of the mixture containing carboxylic acids at 50 DEG to 80 DEG C. In an example, crude terephthalic obtained by the catalytic oxidation of p-di-isopropylbenzene with air in the presence of cobalt naphthenate followed by oxidation with nitric acid, is dissolved in aqueous caustic soda, treated with bleaching powder liquor and heated to reaction temperature, the solution then being acidified at boiling point to yield terephthalic acid.
