Abstract
Anthraquinones are regenerated from the degraded anthraquinone constituents of a working solution of anthraquinone in a solvent used for hydrogen peroxide production, by contacting the working solution with a defined porous granular substance which contains adsorbed base. Alternatively the degraded anthraquinone constituents may be extracted from the working solution and made up into a fresh solution before contact with the alkali treated solid. The porous granular substance, e.g. silica gel, kieselguhr, silica alumina or sodium aluminium silicate, may have a surface area of 30 sq. m./gm. The base may be an alkali metal carbonate, bicarbonate, hydroxide or triethylamine or pyridine. The solid, after alkali treatment, may be washed and/or dried. The working solution treated may be oxidized, reduced or partly reduced and may be concentrated. In a cyclic process involving in succession reduction of an anthraquinone oxidation of the anthrahydroquinone and aqueous extraction of hydrogen peroxide, 10% of the solution may be withdrawn from the hydrogen peroxide extraction stage, treated at at least 75 DEG C. and returned, or a mixture of solution after and before extraction may be treated. A number of specific anthraquinones and solvent mixtures are referred to and the proportion of solid is 5-10%. Specification 465,070 also is referred to.
